A day in the life of a new recruitment consultant

Like many graduates, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left university. Luckily, several of my friends had taken jobs in recruitment. It seemed to offer everything that I was looking for: interaction with people, structured training, client-facing work, the chance to make a difference, have fun, and earn money!

I started as a resourcer / researcher dealing with candidates and working with consultants to fill their vacancies. It was difficult initially and I had to learn a lot very quickly. But after proving myself, I was given the opportunity to become a consultant, which brought greater opportunities for client interaction and an improved package.

It also meant getting stuck into business development and cold calling, which was another steep learning curve. The buzz in the office when someone had been successful made it really exciting though – and that motivation has stayed with me ever since.

A few years on, I’ve developed relationships to board level with some of the world’s leading companies.
